Answer  10

(a).  To award the prize 1st, 2nd and 3rd ,  we will go for permutation theory as the order is important

8 contestants;  so choices available for first prize  =  8

Choices available for 2nd prize = 7

Choices available for 3rd prize  = 6

Total choices available are = 8 x 7 x  6

                              Total choices available are =336

(b).

Groups of three people can get prizes ;

                             nCr  = n!/ r!(n-r)!

                                     =  8! / 3! (8-3)!

                                     =  8 x 7 x 6 x 5!/ 3 x 2 x 1 x 5!

                                       =  56
